Leilani Medel has died after contracting coronavirus and her husband is currently battling the disease in hospital. She has died at the age of 41.

According to family posts, said:

“We are very sad about the news. Her husband is also very sick. He is in critical condition in the hospital. Her daughter has no other family there.”

The couple’s daughter is being cared for in a foster home, according to the family.

Mrs. Medel’s brother, Noel Osotwo, said: “Losing a sister like Leilani is never easy, especially as she had a daughter who needs her very much, but when her life is taken away at such a young age, it is that much more difficult. “We will miss you a lot. I know that you worked so hard for our family. We love you so much.”

Rhian Eccleshare, director of nursing at Hoop Recruitment – the Cardiff-based agency Mrs. Medel worked for – described her as “the kindest of souls”. “Leilani Medel was not only a nurse, but she was also a mother, a wife, and our friend,” she said. Mrs. Medel is one of roughly 45 health workers who have died during the coronavirus pandemic in the UK.

Yesterday tributes were also paid to care home nurse Rahima Bibi Sidhanee who died on Sunday after contracting COVID-19. Ms. Sidhanee, originally from Trinidad, worked at Grennell Lodge Nursing Home in Sutton, south London, for over 30 years.

In the wake of her death the director of Care Unlimited, which operates the privately-owned home, raised concerns about a lack of testing for staff in the social care sector. Danny Shamtally said there was an “urgent need” for testing of care home staff.
