Byun, formerly a staff sergeant in her 20s, enlisted voluntarily in 2017 and went on to have gender confirmation surgery in 2019 in Thailand.
But South Korea remains deeply conservative about matters of sexual and gender identity and is less tolerant of LGBTQ2S+ rights than some other parts of Asia, with many gay and transgender Koreans living largely under the radar.
The defence ministry classified her loss of male genitals as a mental or physical handicap, and a military panel ruled in early 2020 that she would be compulsorily discharged.
Byun had waived her previous anonymity to appear at a press conference at the time to plead to be allowed to serve, wearing her fatigues and saluting the gathered journalists and cameras.
Death and Cause
Emergency officials found him at his home in Cheongju, south of Seoul, on Wednesday when consultants said they could not contact him.
Ms Byun wept at a press conference after being released last year and begged to be allowed to return to the military, saying that service was her dream in her life.
The spokesman for the Korean Human Rights Office said he filed a lawsuit against his dismissal in court in April this year.
The cause of the woman’s death was not clarified shortly after police said an investigation had begun.
However, a spokesman for the National Center for Mental Health, where Byun was treated, said that he had made the decision to commit suicide.
Workers at the centre said they contacted emergency personnel because they were unable to reach Ms Byun since February 28.
Firefighters searched his home around 6:00 p.m. Wednesday and found his body “decomposing.”
Local media reported that Ms Byun is in psychiatric treatment after attempting suicide three months ago.
Sergeant Byun joined an office in 2017 after completing his studies at the military university and becoming a driver.
There, they proved to be one of their best scoring teams. However, she decided to go to Thailand for gender change surgery in November 2019. Ms Byun says she has been fighting for her identity for years.
He said he was aware of the difficulties his superiors were facing, and he also signed permits knowing what he wanted to do.
